The aroid care guide we wish we had at the start
Aroids are the cool kids of the houseplant world: Monstera, Philodendron, Pothos, Anthurium, Alocasia, Syngonium, Peace Lily, and their dramatic cousins. They are in the Araceae family, famous for spadix-and-spathe flowers and foliage that ranges from heart-shaped to who designed this alien umbrella.
Give the roots air.
Most popular indoor aroids hate dense, soggy soil. Use a chunky mix: potting mix plus orchid bark, perlite, coco chips, pumice, or charcoal. If the pot feels like brownie batter, roots will sulk.
The PBTV house mix: 50% high-quality potting mix, 25% orchid bark, 15% perlite, 10% horticultural charcoal. Squeeze a handful — it should hold loose shape, then crumble. Brownie batter = swap mix.
Bright indirect light is the default.
Low light tolerant means will survive, not will throw a parade. Variegated aroids need more light than green ones because the pale parts contain less chlorophyll. Direct sun can still scorch, especially through summer glass.
Water by dryness, not vibes.
Let the top inch or two dry for many climbing and vining aroids. Alocasia and Anthurium may want more even moisture, but none want swamp life unless labeled aquatic.
Climbers want to climb.
Many aroids grow larger, better leaves when supported. A moss pole, plank, trellis, or stake is not just decor. It is a gym membership.
From Monica's notebookI gave my five-year-old a moss pole and a Philodendron Brasil for his birthday. He named it Brian. Brian doubled in leaf size in eight months. The kid won the science fair with photo evidence. Climbers want to climb. They tell you with their leaves.
Humidity is nice. Airflow is nicer.
Humidity can reduce crispy edges, but stagnant wet air invites pests and fungus. Aim for comfortable humidity with movement.
Pet note
Many aroids contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Translation: spicy needles. Keep them away from pets and kids who sample the salad bar.
Starter mistake to avoid
Overpotting. A huge pot holds extra wet mix around small roots. Size up gradually, usually 1 to 2 inches wider.
